Wednesday 10/22/08, 6:30 pmLockheed Martin, 4770 Eastgate Mall San Diego, California 92121
Dr. Joseph Lewis, SDSU Lecturer and Graduate Advisor, Computer Science Department
Sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, San Diego Chapter
About the talk:
Evolutionary systems apply a fitness measure generationally to guide a changing population toward specific behaviors. This is generally done without attention to the implicit structure that may emerge from relationships developing between individuals, particularly in systems where the individuals themselves are complex agents. Attention to such emergent structure might produce better convergence and greater adaptibility. One theory that accounts for the impact of this kind of internal dynamics is autopoeisis (Maturana and Varela, 1980), which describes systems where the coupling between agents within a population plays an important role in the functioning of the system at a global level. These internal dynamics regulate the system's overt behavior in response to environmental pressures. An autopoietic software framework has the potential to bring these ideas into application development; and it has the appeal of being based on a model of cognitive/living systems. In these systems, internal stigmergy (an "echo" of change left by previous actions which influence future actions) provides an emergent, leveragable representation. Software developed with such a framework may be more adaptive and is generally distributed and robust. The goal of the approach is to facilitate self-organization and autonomy, memory and possibly learning.Starcat (http://starcat.org) puts these ideas into a framework for application development that encourages the creation of software based on these principles of complex adaptive systems, in particular emergent representation and adaptive behavior. Pressures both internal and external excite different concepts that fluidly interact with other concepts; the representations that emerge are only partial, but good enough to guide behavior. Several experiments with this software will be presented. These include a demonstration of the generality of its possible computational behavior, comparison with its ancestor/inspiration Copycat (Hofstadter and Mitchell, 1995), tuning issues in a multi-agent version, an effort to bring persistence into the architecture, a jazz improviser program, and a distributed sensor network application. The current insights from these efforts will be discussed.

Tuesday 10/07/08, 5:30 pmQUALCOMM Q-Auditorium
In this tutorial presentation we consider multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems that employ multiple transmit and receive antennas to increase the data rate and achieve signal diversity in fading multipath channels. The performance of MIMO systems is degraded by two types of interference. One is intersymbol interference (ISI) due to channel multipath dispersion. The other is cross-talk or interchannel interference due to the simultaneous transmission from the multiple transmit antennas. The focus of this talk is on channel equalization and interference mitigation in point-to-multipoint (broadcast) MIMO communications in which the MIMO channel characteristics are assumed to be known at the transmitter. Linear and nonlinear equalization and interference mitigation algorithms are described.
