IEEE Regional Student Paper Contest

Ten regional paper contests to recognize technical, written, and verbal communication skills. These skills are key to successful careers. Please visit the Student Paper Contest Hall of Fame for past winners. Contest winners are listed in November each year.

Please request criteria from Regional student activities chairs (RSACs) or Regional student representatives (RSRs). Criteria may differ from Region to Region.

IEEEXtreme 24 Hour Online Competition

IEEEXtreme is a global challenge for teams of student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch or university. Participating in IEEEXtreme gives students a unique and fun learning experience, while competing with teams of students from around the world in a global event.

Prize!
  • Fame: Competing in the world’s most extreme programming contest is a big deal – winning means you get unlimited bragging rights.
  • The grand prize for the first place team is an all expenses paid trip to an IEEE conference or event of the team members’ choice.
  • Members of the winning teams will receive a gift bag, an IEEE certificate and prizes to recognize their efforts.
  • Updates on additional prizes will be announced soon.
Competition Rules
  • Registration for IEEEXtreme will open on 1 September 2009.
  • Teams will submit their problem solutions electronically using the online competition management system using the Mooshak tool.
  • To learn more about the Mooshak tool in preparation, please visit their information pages.
  • The 2009 contest problems will not be available until the day of the contest.
  • Languages supported are: Microsoft Visual C++, C/C++, Java and some surprises.
  • IEEEXtreme has two teams of volunteers working to make this the best event to date. The Organizing team members, responsible for the competition itself, publicity, marketing and working with the Technical team members, who will create and judge the problems. 2009 Top 25 Teams

IEEEXtreme 3.0 was held on 24 October 2009. An amazing 700 teams registered for this exciting event. Teams from universities in 40 countries and the ten Regions of IEEE participated. Our congratulations to all the teams who made this a record-breaking event.

Data is still being evaluated by the IEEEXtreme Org and technical teams. As promised, the top 25 teams were announced on 26 October. More information will follow. It was the positive energy and enthusiasm of the competitors that truly made this an IEEEXtreme event to remember.

IEEE 2010 Presidents' "Change the World" Competition

Are you a student with an idea that could benefit humanity and revolutionize the way we live?

The 2010 IEEE Presidents’ “Change the World” Competition is open to college and university students who demonstrate excellence in the development, design and implementation of technology that can solve a life challenge for the benefit of humanity.

The competition’s goal is to recognize and reward individual students or teams of students who identify a real-world problem and apply engineering, science, computing and leadership skills to solve it. The contest offers students the perfect opportunity to have their ingenuity and enthusiasm for engineering and technology recognized by prestigious IEEE members around the globe.

Prize!
  1. IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme: $10,000 USD
  2. IEEE Distinguished Student Humanitarian: $5,000 USD
  3. IEEE Exceptional Student Humanitarian: $2,500 USD
  4. Up to five Outstanding Student Humanitarian prizes: $1,000 USD
All remaining prizes will be presented by a local IEEE representative. (IEEE Region Director or a designee such as the IEEE Student Activities Chair, a Section Chair or a Student Branch Counselor.) Prizes to winning teams will be split equally among the team’s registered student members*.
Eligibility

The contest is open to individual members of IEEE Student Branches or teams of college and university level students who have elected an IEEE Student Branch member as the team lead.

Judging
IEEE’s Regional Student Activities Committee will select a group of quarter-finalists to advance to the semi-final round. An all-star judging panel of leading IEEE engineers will review the entries and select and rank the finalists. These finalist projects will be posted and online voting to select a “People’s Choice” award will begin. IEEE’s three presidents, immediate past, present and future, will also evaluate the projects and select the final winners based on the results their project achieves as well as the overall impact on humanity or their local community. Entries will also be judged by sustainability, reusability and transportability of the project’s results to other parts of the world.
Selection Criteria

The winners shall be selected based on the results achieved and their impact on humanity, or, on a community.

Sustainability, reusability, transportability of the results to other parts of the world, entrepreneurship, originality, creativity and leadership shall be important but secondary evaluation factors.

Submissions
Entries must be submitted using the form that will be housed on competition Web site which will be available in September. Requirements include the following:
  • Project title
  • Problem description
  • Solution
  • Impact on humanity or a community
  • Primary leader with name and contact information, namely Full name, college/university, address, phone number and email address. Other major student contributors and their contributions.
  • Other contributors
  • Submissions will be limited to 2,500 words

IEEE Student Branch Web Site Contest

The IEEE Student Branch Web Site Contest is conducted by the IEEE Student Activities Committee.

Prize!
1st Place: $1000 USD
2nd Place: $750 USD
3rd Place: $500 USD
Runner-up: $250 USD
Eligibility

All IEEE Student Branches and Branch Chapters are eligible for the Web site contest. Each Student Branch may enter at most one Web site, regardless of the number of Branch Chapters present. To enter your Branch, simply send an e-mail message to your Regional Students Committee Chair (RSC), Regional Student Representative (RSR) and to the Contest Administrator with the subject "IEEE Student Branch Web Site Contest." Please include:

  • The URL of your Web site.
  • The name of the Student Branch it belongs to.
  • The IEEE Region you are in.
  • The e-mail address of the Web site contact or administrator.
  • Your name and e-mail address (if different from the administrator).
Also make sure that you follow the specific submission rules as outlined by your RSAC.
Deadline
  1. Branches submit their URLs no later than 15 April to their Region. Some of the Regions may require you to submit your entries earlier. Please contact your RSC for exact date of entry for your region.
  2. Each regional judging panel sends regional selections to the Students Committee judging panel in the finals based on the following formula:
    1. A Region that has greater than 10 entries but less than 20 can submit 2 entries in the finals.
    2. A Region that has greater than 20 entries can submit 3 entries in the finals.
  3. The Students Committee awards will be announced in June.
  4. During the period of judging, no changes in the design will be permitted.
Entries must be sent no later than 28 May to the contest administrator.

Outstanding Sophomore Award

The Outstanding Sophomore Award is an award given by the IEEE San Diego Section to Electrical Engineering majors in their sophomore year who have excelled academically and shown leadership in the community. One winner is selected from each school.

  • Currently enrolled student in their Sophomore year

  • High GPA
  • Involvement in IEEE or the community
How to Apply
  • Submit nominations to Charles Tu by January 22, 2010. Include name, email, phone, school, GPA, IEEE member number, and a short recommendation of the nominee.
  • Self nominations OK.
  • If selected, the winner will attend an IEEE San Diego Section meeting to retrieve the award.
