Girls' Day Out
is and event hosted by both TESC and SPAWAR. The event celebrates women who are in the field of science and engineering; its purpose is to promote science and engineering to middle school girls. There are great keynote speakers from local women engineers and scientists; hands on experiments are led by UCSD students and professionals.
Contact the current TESC outreach chair, Stephan Kemper, at wkemper [at] ucsd.edu or the SPAWAR outreach director James Rohr Spawar james.rohr [at] navy.mil.

Eureka!
Engineering Undergraduate Research Konference and Assembly is an annual research conference for undergrads. It is an opportunity to display work and have it seen by CAP members and important administrators such as the Dean and chairs of the engineering departments. There is a cash prize for the winning poster. All projects should participate in Eureka.

Enspire
Enspire is a student-run outreach event designed to introduce middle school students to university-level engineering. Approximately 400 students came to the UCSD campus on Wednesday, February 18th, to participate in a day of events that would familiarize them with the many opportunities in engineering. From 10am to noon, the students went on a series of lab tours and attended an engineering fair where many student organizations and engineering companies exhibited hands-on demonstrations. We hosted a booth where students could play with robots and learn how to build a simple circuit.

IEEE Xtreme 24-hour Programming Contest
IEEEXtreme is a worldwide contest in which teams of student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE Member, compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems. We place 4th out of 135 in the 2008 contest. The 2008 contest took place March 8, 2008.

SD Science Festival
Expo Day on Saurday, April 4th, the festival's grand finale in Balboa Park, brought together over 50,000 attendees from all over the county, state, and even the world to visit over 200 different booths and watch over 25 science-related performances. Sponsor companies and collaborating organizations provided activities for families and people of all ages including finger painting with algae, playing catch with a robot, looking through telescopes at sunspots, racing remote controlled cars, making test-tube lava lamps, and creating musical instruments. We hosted an interactive exhibit at this event.

Dragon Boat Festival
The annual dragon boat race is an event hosted by the San Diego Alliance for Asian Pacific Islander Americans where teams of 16 race dragon boats. Regular attendees include LG, Qualcomm, HP, and other high tech companies. This event is the best event of the year. It is held at mission bay, and Charles Tu pays our registration fee out of his personal money.

Junkyard Derby
Inspired the popular TV show on The Learning Channel, "Junkyard Wars," UC San Diego's engineering community started the Junkyard Derby in 2004. For three weeks prior to the event, Engineering students scour the local community for "junk," acting as La Jolla's personal clean-up crew. The Junk Collection culminates in a Kick-Off Celebration where teams rush into a makeshift junkyard and attempt to grab the best junk with which to engineer their speed machines. After two nights and a day of building, the teams race down Peterson Hill in the middle of UC San Diego's campus with crowds of onlookers cheering them on and the hopes that their car will carry them to victory. IEEE UCSD won 2004 and 2005. We made good showings in 06, 07, 08.
